“Through Launch Pad, I learned that anything is possible.”
Those are Kuan Wei Huang’s strong words about our college readiness program, Launch Pad. With the help of Launch Pad Coordinator Dr. Paula Tyler, Kuan Wei saw his dream become a reality.
The senior at R. L. Paschal High School, just got accepted into the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)! MIT has been Kuan Wei’s dream school since he was a kid.
To grasp the magnitude of Kuan Wei’s accomplishment, Google “Best Engineering School in the United States” and see the results.
We had the honor of sitting down with Kuan Wei for a video interview last week. He told us about his journey to MIT (watch here). When he was in the third grade, Kuan Wei moved to the United States with his mom from Taiwan. They knew nothing about the culture or language. When it came time to start thinking about colleges, Kuan Wei and his mother had no idea where to start. And they didn’t have to budget to pay for a pricy tutor or college prep program.
Luckily, Kuan Wei and his mom visited the Fort Worth Library frequently. They saw a bulletin for Launch Pad, The Foundation’s free college readiness program. They contacted Dr. Tyler immediately. Of course, she was happy to help.
Dr. Tyler helped Kuan Wei navigate the application process and provided support that Kuan Wei needed during the challenging time. Kuan Wei said Dr. Tyler was passionate, patient, and helped make the application process “way less scary.”
Both Dr. Tyler and Kuan Wei were overjoyed to see MIT’s acceptance letter.
We’re so happy for Kuan Wei and can’t wait to see what he accomplishes as an engineering student! And we consider it an honor to help students like him reach their goals. Here’s some sage advice from Kuan Wei for future college applicants, “As long as you work for it, anything is possible.”
